A
native Texan, Michael's interest in art started early with his "Nan",
a notable ceramic painter and
high school art teacher in East Texas.
Many hours were spent around
her easel, kiln and closet darkroom.
He carried his love of all
arts through high school
and college, receiving a
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree
from Stephen F. Austin
University. His main emphasis of study
centered on the two things
that would become his
passions: sculpture &
photography. Michael's path has led
him to a successful career as
a commercial photographer in Dallas
and has opened the door to his
other love, creating metal sculptures
using scrap metal and everyday
materials.
In describing his inspiration,
Haskins says "quirky shapes and shadows tend to
determine
the main elements and direction of my work. It may be the gleam
of a sliver of stainless steel wire or the severely rusted gears of a
57’ Chevy
transmission. To me, all pieces and parts are equally intriguing. My
goal is to
destroy the new, polish the
old and recycle them into one unified creation.
Metal in any form inspires me."
His works are included in
private collections across the
United States.
